Making an existing detail feel entirely intentional.

For this Kaufman couple, the goal was simple: update a dated kitchen and give it a fresh, more refined feel. But one existing detail made this project particularly personal, a window between the kitchen and pantry.

It would have been easy to remove it. Instead, the homeowner wanted it to stay. Her mother had always loved the window, and that made it worth finding a way to make it work within the new design.

Rather than treating the window as something we had to design around, we made it part of the design. We reworked it so it felt connected to the new kitchen while limiting the view into the pantry, keeping what she loved without putting everything behind it on display.

A brass sill became the finishing detail. Getting it just right proved to be one of the more challenging parts of the project, but it gave the window the presence and intention it needed.

We extended the cabinetry to the ceiling, drawing the eye upward and giving the kitchen a taller, more finished feel. The result is a calm, updated space where the original window no longer feels like an odd architectural leftover. It feels like it was meant to be there.

Sometimes good design isn't about taking everything away and starting over. It's knowing what deserves to stay and making it better.
