The fireplace she wanted to stop looking at.

The fireplace was the first thing she noticed—and not in a good way. The original surround felt unfinished, the television cords were exposed and an awkward recessed area beside it had become a place to set whatever did not have another home.

The homeowners were a young couple settling into a new home. They did not need the entire room rebuilt. They needed one prominent wall to feel considered, functional and much more like them.

The new design treats the fireplace and adjacent niche as one architectural composition.

White millwork gives the wall structure while the charcoal surround and hearth bring contrast. The former open recess became a custom arched built-in with concealed storage, warm wood shelves, brass rails and a deep teal backing.

The color gives the room personality without overwhelming it. Wall sconces, panel molding and carefully aligned proportions make the entire installation feel intentional rather than added later.

This project was completed through The Design Plan. We developed the fireplace concept, finishes and architectural details so the homeowners had a clear direction to take into construction.

The result is a wall that feels intentional from end to end—and a fireplace she is finally happy to look at.

What had been an awkward, builder-basic wall now feels finished and personal. The arched niche turns a problem area into a feature, while the cabinetry provides practical storage for everything that no longer needs to sit in view.

The completed fireplace feels like her—tailored, distinctive and just bold enough.
